Why alternative metals
They are dramatically harder than precious metals, so they hold a finish through work that would visibly mark gold within weeks. They are lighter on the budget, and they open up a design vocabulary of inlays, textures and colour combinations that traditional metals cannot match.
The trade offs
None of these metals can be resized, so sizing must be right at purchase. They have little intrinsic metal value, so they are replaced rather than repaired. Titanium is the lightest, cobalt is the closest in look to white gold, ceramic holds colour permanently, and zirconium can be finished to a deep permanent black.
