About Diamond Designs

Serving Greater New Haven since 2002

Diamond Designs opened in Orange, Connecticut in 2002. The story starts earlier than that, in 1983, and it starts with a different jewelry store two decades before this one existed.

What follows is not a company timeline. It is the reason a family that could have done anything else has spent forty years behind the same kind of counter, in the same corner of Connecticut, selling to people who now bring their children in.

How we got here

The generation before

Deepak Dadlani's parents moved to Orange, Connecticut in 1983 and opened a jewelry store of their own. They served Orange, Milford and West Haven for years, one customer at a time.

What they built was not scale. It was the kind of relationship where a person comes in for a watch battery, and comes back nineteen years later for their daughter's engagement ring, and expects to be recognized. That expectation is the inheritance.

Diamond Designs opens

Deepak, a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, opened Diamond Designs in Orange in 2002.

The GIA training matters for a specific reason. A diamond is one of the few things people buy at that price without being able to judge it themselves. Grading is technical, the differences are invisible to an untrained eye, and the gap between what a stone is and what it is called is where most people get taken. Formal gemological training is the difference between a jeweler who can explain a stone and one who can only describe it.

Today

A designer selection with a mom and pop feel

The store carries nine designer houses, including Simon G., Ritani, ArtCarved, Shy Creation, Lashbrook and Belle Étoile. That is a serious selection for an independent store, and it exists because being independent means the cases hold what we chose rather than what a head office allocated.

When none of it is right, the workshop takes over. Custom design has been part of the business from the start, and it is often the answer for someone who has looked at every case in the state and still not found the ring they are picturing.

Twenty years of the same promise

Over twenty years in one town produces something a marketing budget cannot buy: people who came in for their engagement ring, then their wedding bands, then an anniversary piece, and who now send their children.

It also produces accountability. In a store this size there is nowhere to hide from a customer who was not treated well. That is not a burden. It is the entire operating model.

What has not changed

You deal with the owner

There is no regional manager and no script. The person answering your question about a stone is the person who bought it.

Explanation over persuasion

We would rather you understand what you are buying than agree quickly. That includes telling you when a cheaper stone is the better call, and when the piece you already own is worth keeping.

The work does not end at the sale

Cleaning and prong inspection are complimentary for as long as you own the piece. A worn prong found in time is a quick fix. Found late, it is a lost stone.

We are still here

Same town, same family, same counter. Worth something when the piece you are buying is meant to last fifty years.

Every service on this list is described in full on our after sales service page, including what the warranty covers and what it does not.

Who we serve

Diamond Designs sits on Boston Post Road in Orange, which puts us within easy reach of Milford, West Haven, New Haven, Woodbridge and the shoreline towns. Clients also come from the Naugatuck Valley and lower Fairfield County, often because someone recommended us rather than because they searched.

The full list of towns we serve, and what brings people from each of them, is on our areas we serve page.

Photographs of a showroom tell you very little. Twenty minutes at the counter tells you everything, and it commits you to nothing.
